A Study on stress of emergency room patients

Abstract
This study was designed to find stress level events related to the experience of emergency patients, and to offer nursing intervention in order to reduce the stress of patients. Questionnaires were distributed to 93 patients coming to emergency room of C university hospital from October 9 to 21 in 1991. Analysis of data was uses SPSS/PC, mean for stress level, the relationship between patient¡¯s characteristics and stress were analyzed by using mean, t-test, the ANOVA, the Pearson correlation coefficient. The results of this study were as follows : 1. The principal stress of emergency room patients appeared to be, in order, "aggrevation of symptom"(M=3.02, S.D.=1.00), "delay the treatment" (M=2.88, S.D.=0.97), "worry about being burden to family"(M=2.86, S.D.=0.90), "waiting for the results of laboratory test" (M=2.80, S.D.=0.88), "difficulty to meet doctor" (M=2.78, S.D.=1.04), "disease would be a obstacle to their scholastic or social activities" (M=2.78, S.D.=1.07). 2. The level of stress factor was in sequence : stress related socio-economic factor (M=2.70, S.D.=1.01), stress related physical state and disease (M=2.57, S.D.=1.0), stress related medical team(M=2.39, S.D.=0.95), stress related surrounding of hospital. (M=2.17, S.D.=0.95). 3. It was found that occupation (P<0.05), admission history (P<0.005) were statistically significant, in the stress related to characteristics of patient.
